A recent health department report confirmed the presence of E. coli bacteria in several drinking water sources across Karumaloor in Ernakulam district, Kerala. The contamination has led to multiple cases of jaundice and raised serious public health concerns.

According to officials, more than 30 residents were affected, and six fatalities were reported in connection with the outbreak. Water samples collected by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) tested positive for E. coli, which experts believe may have entered wells and pipelines through leakage from poorly maintained septic tanks and untreated waste discharge.

Environmental experts are now calling for immediate sanitation reforms and the adoption of eco-friendly waste treatment systems. Modern technologies such as bio septic tanks are being recognized as a sustainable way to prevent bacterial contamination of groundwater.
